MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO

COMPANY PHILOSOPHY

The Miyake Design Studio was established by Issey Miyake on April 11, 1970. It was created and still serves as a laboratory for researching, planning and creating clothing that is both socially conscious and universal in nature. The staff at the design studio collaborate with local regions and factories where production is done; and also experiment with new materials and techniques at the company's own workshop. This process gives birth to original materials, innovative technologies, and unique methodologies.
The Miyake Design Studio has always created and continues to create clothing tailored to the times. It values and fosters individual creativity and research as well as teamwork; and the next generation of talents who were mentored by have studied under Issey Miyake are thriving.
Another major role of the Miyake Design Studio is to preserve and manage intellectual property, providing ongoing value and protection of the trademark rights for the many innovative and creative designs as well as the company’s many brands. The Miyake Design Studio also works to partner with other companies to plan and develop products in a wide range of areas beyond clothing.
The design studio is rooted in Miyake’s touchstone idea of creating clothing from the most universal of concepts “A Piece of Cloth.” We will preserve and advance the spirit of the Miyake Design Studio by continuing to look to the future and to create clothing that is sustainable, beautiful and suited to the needs of people in a given time.
